Salem Uzhavar Sandhais' good show

SALEM: A staggering 3.51 lakh tonnes of fresh vegetables and fruits worth Rs 351.74 crore were sold at eight Uzhavar Sandhais (farmer's markets) in Salem district in 11 years (1999- 2010).

A total of 26.46 lakh farmers and 729.55 lakh consumers were the beneficiaries.

Steep rise

The steep increase in the prices of vegetables in open markets in recent times had boosted sales in these markets where prices were fixed as per government norms, insulating the consumers from the price pinch.

“The farmers benefited by the 20 per cent increase in the prices of vegetables and fruits while the consumers enjoyed 15 per cent lesser price than in the retail outlets in the open markets,” said Deputy Director of Agriculture, Salem, (Agri Business) S. Nagarajan.

Eight markets

The eight markets in Sooramangalam, Ammapet, Dadagapati and Hasthampatti in Salem city and in Attur, Attyampatti, Ilampillai and Mettur in the district have achieved the combined record sales.

The ninth one at Thammapatti was opened in March just prior to the announcement of the Tamil Nadu Assembly election Model Code of Conduct.

2010-2011

During 2010-2011, the average daily arrival of vegetables and fruits was 137.73 tonnes worth Rs 21.44 lakh from which 890 farmers and 27967 consumers benefited.

The Horticulture Department identified 3,274 farmers for whom Identity cards were issued. These markets have been provided with electronic weighing scales and other facilities.

Cold storage

Cold storage facility, available in four markets in Sooramangalam, Dadagapatti, Ammapet and Attur, stored 381 tonnes of vegetables during the period 2009-2010.

The State, between 1999 and 2000, had 103 markets, which after an increase in public patronage, went up to 154.
